Chiante Deal, M.A.

I am a native Houstonian and a first-generation college student.  I had a supportive family and education was important, but we talked little about “how” to move beyond high school. I did well in high school and landed at Sam Houston State in the fall of 1990.  However, the decision to go to Sam Houston was not because it was a well thought out decision.  It was because my grades were good, it was close, and somewhat affordable. After some unsuccessful majors, I spent the summer as a Camp Counselor for The Girl Scouts.  There, I finally knew what I wanted to do – what I was called to do. I returned to school, changed my major and became a teacher.  I graduated from Sam Houston State (December 1995), worked 10 years as teacher/English specialist/District staff facilitator before pursuing and successfully completing the Masters in Counseling program at Prairie View A&M University in December 2005.  For 17 years, I have served as a School Counselor with a huge interest in helping students find their next steps and to make them confidently. In addition to my work in the ISD, I am also an Adjunct Professor with Lone Star College for first time college students.

My Why

My Why – simply, students and their success.    I’ve watched both students and parents struggle with the college admission process.  It drives me to learn and be a source of information and guidance. But, it came full circle when my children entered high school and we knew graduation was only a few short years away.   I, then, began to walk a path that I had only helped with, and I knew that I wanted to help more people see that college IS POSSIBLE.  It is my goal to help students successfully navigate these waters with ease, grace and avoid common missteps.  My why pushes me daily to help students and families craft a plan to first understand what the admissions process looks like, and then to put that plan into action.  No-one can say what the college admissions office decision will be, but my goal is to help students create the best application, craft a story telling essay, and find their best fit!
